Saturday 25 June
- St Mary's Saffron Walden and Sheene Mill
I photographed for Madeleine's cousin
a few years ago and was so excited when she contacted me to
say that her and James were planning their own celebrations.
In fact I was made to feel truely like a member of the family
from the moment I arrived at her parents house to capture
Getting to the church before the bride
was a bit of a challenge given the need to park some distance
away and was only possible due to the kind generousity of
the brides brother in lending me some coins for the parking
St Mary's in Saffron Walden has to be
the largest church I've photographed in to date and quite
strict over the taking of photos. I may have gotten told off
for not staying behind all the guests on one occasion!
Given the threat of heavy showers, everyone
made a beeline to congratulate the couple directly on exiting
the church. It was lovely to give them time to mingle and
chat before doing some formal groups on the steps and then
taking the bride and groom to the gardens for some time on
Arriving at Sheene Mill the sun was still
shining (for a bit). Of course it didn't stay that way for
the whole drinks reception but thankfully there was a marquee
to shelter under and we made the most of the dry spells. The
new over the lake pagoda is lovely and makes a great backdrop
for photos. Madeleine really wanted a shot of everyone so
I had to scope which bedroom window would work the best.
For the wedding breakfast the couple
really made it personal. Each of the tables was a year in
their relationship with corresponding photos. Guests 'placecards'
were handwritten pebbles from the beach where they got engaged.
Now I hope Madeleine won't mind me mentioning that she's battled
cancer in the last few years so the speeches were an amazingly
emotional experience for everyone in the room.
After the guests were well fed and watered
I knew that the evening would be a proper party. What I wasn't
expecting was the full choreographed first dance number, complete
with fancy lift. I nearly dropped my camera I got so excited.
It was just missing the Strictly Come Dancing score paddles!
